Nestos River

This is the second longest river in Thrace and one of the five largest in Greece. Nestos is a natural border between Macedonia and Thrace. It springs from Bulgaria and has a total length 234 klm. out of which 130 klm. are in Greek territory. There are two hydroelectric dams along a part of the river that flow in our country: Thisavros and Platanovrisi.

The famous Delta of Nestos occupies a large area in the southern part of the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi. The point where the river meets the sea is a point of great biological interest and tourist attraction. The Delta of Nestos was declared a Wetland of International Importance protected by the Ramsar Convention. Although humans have intervened, the place still possesses an incredible beauty. The rich and rare flora and fauna is not met anywhere else.

The natural beauty of Nestos is indisputable. The weird formations of the mountains, the serpentine-like river, the lush vegetation and the songs of the 254 bird species found there, will fascinate every visitor. There are facilities for various activities, such as canoeing, archery, biking, hiking, bird observation, etc.
