Museum of Natural History

The Natural History Museum was founded in October 2002 in Paranesti town. The museum was created by the Operational Program "Environment" of the Ministry ΠΕ.ΧΩ.ΔΕ., and it belongs to the Municipal Development Corporation Paranesti. It aims to bring the world into contact with the natural environment of Rhodope and Nestos valley which is an ecosystem of great biological and geological diversity.

Inside the museum there is a large map depicting Rhodope Mountain and a table for mammals, reptiles, nocturnal raptors and amphibians. There is also a display case on the geology of Rhodope, minerals and rocks of the area (granite, rhyolite, sandstone, , pegmatite) and rocks from other parts of eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The second and third display case exhibit terrestrial snails and arthropods (spiders, scorpions, isopods, etc.) and samples of mosses, lichens, fungi and ferns.
